Job description: Position Overview

The Ward of the 21st Century in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for an Implementation Scientist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The W21C is a research and innovation initiative within the O’Brien Institute for Public Health at the University of Calgary. W21C’s collaborative space and diverse team program supports and enables health researchers to bring new ideas, prototypes, or health care innovations into the health care environment. One of W21C’s primary goals is to attract and support multidisciplinary researchers, clinicians, industry partners, and patients and their families to collaborate on innovative approaches to improve patient safety and quality of care using state-of-the-art health services and research infrastructure.

Reporting to the Health Everywhere Hub Program Manager at the W21C, the Implementation Scientist will play a critical role in bridging the gap between research findings and practical application within the health system.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Leadership and Strategy
  • Provide mentorship and leadership to Health Everywhere theme leads and project teams on approaches to utilizing implementation science methods, models, and theories
  • Collaborate with transdisciplinary teams to understand and distill complex research findings into actionable recommendations for implementation
  • Develop strategies for translating evidence-based interventions and innovations into real-world settings
  • Lead the development of implementation plans, considering the unique challenges and opportunities within academic and health system contexts
  • Design and oversee the development of programs and initiatives based on research evidence, ensuring they align with individual project and overall Health Everywhere objectives
  • Collaborate with faculty and project teams to identify potential areas for program expansion and improvement
  • Lead and contribute to the development of competitive grant proposals related to implementation science projects
  • Evaluation and Assessment:
  • Develop and implement evaluation frameworks to assess the impact of implemented programs and interventions
  • Use data-driven insights to refine and enhance implementation strategies over time
  • Lead project teams in implementing projects and support the evaluation of related findings
  • Support the translation of research findings into manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences
  • Communication and Relationships:
  • Work closely with faculty, other post-secondary institutions, health system partners, and innovators to align implementation strategies with Health Everywhere Hub’s goals
  • Initiate and foster relationships with health system partners that will be involved in implementing research within Health Everywhere
  • Promote collaboration between internal and external partners working with the Health Everywhere Hub
  • Use initiative and good judgment, and work in a cooperative, timely and efficient manner that is proactive in communicating and sharing information

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent in a related field (e.g., Health Sciences, Public Health, Implementation Science, Psychology). A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in applied research, implementation science, or health services research
  • Demonstrated experience in research utilizing implementation science models, theories, frameworks, strategies, and tools
  • Strong understanding of the health system and challenges associated with implementing evidence-based practices
  • Familiarity with digital health or health technology considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners
