Job description: GENERAL SUMMARY

The Research Scientist will work under the direction of a Principal Investigator, Michelle Rengarajan, MD, PhD, in the Endocrine Unit at MGH. Primary responsibilities include daily laboratory work focusing on experimental design, execution, and data analysis in splice switching oligonucleotide therapy development, collaboration with other labs in the area to gain exposure to patient-derived cell models for therapeutic analyses, and participation in departmental, institutional, and Boston-area seminars to broaden the skill set in this burgeoning space. This position requires a person who has PhD in biochemistry, molecular/cell biology or a related field, pays attention to details, is capable of working independently, possesses good verbal and written communication skills, and works well as part of a team. This is a per diem role with a varied weekly schedule not exceeding 20 hours/week.


Responsibilities comprise, but are not limited to:

  • Design and execution of a screen of splice-switching oligonucleotides leading to restoration of reading frame in patient-derived cells.
  • Submission of a grant proposal for independent funding within the first year; successful management of a research project from conception to completion.
  • Regular presentations at conferences; submission of at least one first-author manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal


  • Providing technical support to lab personnel in various protocols, developing SOP’s in the lab, design of experimental plans and methods.
  • Teaching students and postdocs.



  • Ph.D. or M.D. required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of research experience (inclusive of graduate studies) required.


  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and productively.
  • Strong research design and analytical skills, with demonstrated ability to problem solving.
  • Background in oligonucleotide biochemistry including chemical modifications.
  • Excellent presentation skills; proficiency in scientific writing for publication.
  • Capacity to organize complex projects and diverse staff members and outstanding judgment with regards to study design and protocols
  • Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as Internet applications) and the ability to learn new computer applications
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to oversee research assistants and others on the team in collaborative projects.


  • Duties will be performed in a research laboratory.
  • Duties will be carried out in a typical hybrid office environment; most days will be on-site in the office, with some remote work considered as appropriate.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
  • Per Diem Hours
