Job title: Process Modelling Expert – Associate Principal Scientist
Company: AstraZeneca
Job description: Process Modelling Expert – Associate Principal ScientistIntroduction to Role:Are you a scientific leader passionate about driving process modelling and simulation in process development and optimisation? If you’re looking to apply your expertise in a company that follows the science and changes lives worldwide, AstraZeneca is the place for you! As a Process Modelling Expert, you will be a scientific leader driving process modelling & simulation in API process development and optimisation. You will collaborate with colleagues across various skillset areas to develop, maintain, and connect high fidelity process models.Your Business Area
In Chemical Development we believe that nothing is impossible, and we are determined to push the boundaries of science to deliver medicines to our patients. We combine people’s technical knowledge and understanding with their talent and drive to design, develop and optimise synthetic routes that deliver the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) of our medicines in a sustainable, commercially viable way. We believe in innovation and continuous improvement, working closely with colleagues in academia and across industry, to ensure that we apply the latest technologies and principles in the processes we develop. Our ambition is to establish a strong data driven, prediction, modelling, and simulation culture within the department to carry out our research and experimental work in the most efficient way and maximise learning from data generated. To achieve our bold ambition, we have an open position for an Associate Principal Scientist in Process Modelling.Accountabilities:In this role, you will collaborate with chemists, chemical engineers, analytical chemists, and crystallisation experts to integrate modelling with experimental data and optimise API manufacturing processes. You will apply Integrated systems modelling to support batch and continuous processes. You will harness modern programming languages and libraries to build efficient Machine Learning code. You will design, develop, and implement process models and simulations using advanced modelling software. You will prepare and present high-quality technical reports, presentations, and scientific papers. You will drive digital transformation within Chemical Development and mentor scientists with less experience.Essential Skills/Experience:Degree or PhD in a relevant area such as, chemical engineering or similar. You need a strong understanding of engineering principles of unit operations in chemical processes (e.g. mixing, distillation, liquid-liquid extraction, crystallisation isolation and drying), and have experience of in-silico modelling of such operations. You are used to working and collaborating with colleagues with different skillsets. You also need experience working alongside R&D scientists (chemists, analysts, statisticians and crystallisation scientists).Strong experience in process modelling, simulation, and optimisation in the pharmaceutical or chemical industry, demonstrating hands-on experience in applying these techniques to real-world problems.Experience with engineering or pharmaceutical computational techniques is required, such as: discrete element method (DEM), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), process models and flowsheets, statistical techniques, population-balance models (PBM), and engineering modelsExperience with Aspen Plus, HYSYS, and gPROMS software is highly desirable, providing proficiency in advanced modelling tools for process understanding and optimisation.Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal, ensuring effective communication of research findings and technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.Ability to work independently and as part of a team, contributing to a collaborative and supportive work environment.Passion for innovation and a commitment to cutting-edge technologies, driving the development of novel optimisation approaches for API development. When we put unexpected teams in the same room, we unleash bold thinking with the power to inspire life-changing medicines. In-person working gives us the platform we need to connect, work at pace and challenge perceptions. That’s why we work, on average, a minimum of three days per week from the office.
