The CCOG Data Science team focuses on using ML and AI approaches in more of consulting area looking at questions such as: what content should we commission; what will the current content slate deliver for the business in the next 18 months; forecasting the BBC markets; setting business targets.

Main responsibilities

Your role within this team is in three parts:

  • As a leader in the team you’ll ensure quality of delivery, be responsible for career development, and bringing the parts together into a whole
  • As a consultant to the heads of the divisional teams (who come from more traditional insight / research backgrounds) you’ll help them understand where the data science team can deliver the most value and bring new ways to answer our business questions
  • As an individual you’ll act as Product / Project lead for the larger and more strategic projects, working with stakeholders to successfully scope and deliver them to both a high technical level and with an impact in the business.

The right person for this job will be happy working in a team spread over the business, be able to form good working relationships quickly, and be patient with others. You’ll be interested in it all areas TV, Radio and Online.

You will have a high degree of technical competence and be able to set up and manage projects over a range of areas; be interested in learning new skills and adapting approaches is an important part of this role.

You will manage discussions with stakeholders, work closely with colleagues in different areas of the BBC and recommend appropriate approaches to meet a variety of strategic and tactical business needs.

Summary of the role:

  • Helping to define the data science strategy for one or more division within the BBC (such as Audio, Sport or Content) within the BBC, and prioritizing work with the team.
  • Working with the appropriate Lead Data Analysts on the wider use and prioritization for data with the divisions / areas you are responsible for
  • Providing technical expertise in the development and implementation of data science capability and standards with a focus on machine learning / algorithmic solutions
  • Mentoring and developing the data scientists in the team to promote best practice
  • Developing relationships and presenting results to senior stakeholders
  • Working alongside other parts of the data analytics family such as the researchers, digital analysis teams, and MVT specialists to allow greater depth of projects.
  • Seeking out proactive opportunities to use our data and experience
  • Developing your own skills in analytics-related areas keeping up to date with the latest developments in the field.
  • Liaising with suppliers when necessary

Are you the right candidate?

To achieve this you will hold significant experience in some of the following and be able to demonstrate and understanding and interest in others:

A strong candidate for this role will have some or all of the following:

  • Experience of managing, coaching and developing teams
  • Strong consulting / stakeholder management skills with a focus on delivery and business impact
  • In-depth knowledge of machine learning / data science techniques
  • Understanding of data sources relevant to the BBC such as collect technologies for online behavioural data, BARB, and metadata
  • Ability to define projects by understanding the business need and then converting this into the brief needed to deliver the project.
  • Excellent scripting languages e.g. SQL, R, Python
  • Whilst not a Data Engineer, good understanding of data engineering approaches and technologies.
  • Understanding of agile methodology & principles within project management
  • Experience of using tools such as Google 360, ATI, Adobe Analytics or similar tool digital analytics platforms including implication of tagging for data collection
  • Comfortable working alongside cross-functional teams interacting with Product Managers, Engineers, Data Scientists, Researchers and Analysts
  • Interest, knowledge, and experience in marketing digital products
  • Passion for team delivery of complex project delivering impact
