About the roleThis Data Scientist role in Suncorp’s Natural Perils Pricing team supports climate risk analysis using AI-driven modelling solutions. The focus is on leveraging neural networks to uncover insights into how extreme weather impacts risk costs, customers, and communities. You will collaborate with actuaries, climate scientists, and engineers, enhancing the team’s climate research and model development. Additionally, the role involves supporting risk selection, insurance products, and stakeholder engagement.What you’ll do
- Apply neural network modelling techniques to uncover connections between climate and insurance domains.
- Develop solutions to complex, non-obvious problems, ensuring scientific robustness by integrating earth system science into models.
- Implement research findings into natural peril pricing and insurance products.
- Collaborate across functions, providing data science insights and clear communication on complex topics to senior leadership.
What you’ll bring
- PhD or master’s in earth systems science, physics, engineering, computer science, data science, or actuarial (required).
- 3+ years of experience in AI-driven modelling (e.g., computer vision, medical imaging, nonlinear dynamics, climate).
- Proficiency in artificial neural networks (e.g., CNNs, RNNs, GANs, GNNs, Diffusion models) and cloud-based technologies (CUDA API, parallel computing).
- Expertise in model design, testing, validation, and advanced programming (Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow); additional languages like R, C++, Java are beneficial.
- Strong data extraction skills using SQL, SAS, and similar tools.
